Born into the Yoshida family of Kyoto physicians, wealthy merchants who also ran a moneylending business.
From around this time, holding vermilion-seal licences, he traded with Annam (Vietnam) and made a great fortune (start date debated).
He cleared rocks from the Ōi (Hozu) River linking Tanba and Kyoto so that boats could pass, making it easier to ship Tanba's timber and rice to Kyoto.
On shogunate orders he made the Fuji River between Kai and Suruga navigable.
At his own expense he began digging the Takase canal from Nijō in Kyoto to Fushimi for transport, linking Kyoto to Osaka by water and supporting the city's growth.
He died in the year the Takase canal was completed; his son Soan carried on his enterprises.
