The path they walked

1582

Birth

Born the fifth son of Kinoshita Iesada. Through his mother he was tied to Hideyoshi's wife Nene, and as a child became Hideyoshi's adopted son. Childhood name Tatsunosuke; later Hashiba Hideatoshi.

1590

As Hideyoshi's attendant

He served near Hideyoshi at Jurakudai and Osaka Castle, raised as a Toyotomi kin. Being the hegemon's adopted son brought both glory and heavy pressure.

1594

Adopted by the Kobayakawa

By Hideyoshi's order he became Takakage's adopted son and took the name Kobayakawa Hideaki. Takakage was famed as a wise general; Hideaki, still in his early teens, stood to inherit a great house.

1595

Lord of Chikuzen

After Takakage retired he inherited Chikuzen and other northern Kyushu lands. Retainers backed the young head as he began life as a daimyo under Hideyoshi.

1597

Keicho campaign

He took part in the Keicho invasion of Korea. Tradition says Hideyoshi was displeased with his conduct, and he faced harsh treatment including a temporary transfer of lands.

1598

Death of Hideyoshi

When Hideyoshi died, power headed toward conflict between Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari. Hideaki had to choose sides; opinion in his house split.

1599

Vacillation between East and West

As Ieyasu-Mitsunari conflict deepened, Hideaki showed Western leanings yet withheld a final choice. Until just before Sekigahara his side was unclear; both armies courted him.

1600

Battle of Sekigahara

At Sekigahara, listed with the West, he watched the tide then defected to the East and attacked Otani Yoshitsugu and others. A major factor in Eastern victory, he received 500,000 koku in Bizen and Mimasaka.

1601

Lord of Okayama

He began ruling from Okayama Castle. But the burden of vast rank at a young age and public judgment of his defection weighed heavily.

1602

Death

He died of illness in Okayama at twenty-one. Without an heir the Kobayakawa house was abolished. A short life of the young general who decided Sekigahara.
